Fixing this turned out to be more work than I had anticipated due to
changes to PCL introduced in SBCL 0.9.14. But now it should be working
in SBCL (0.9.15 and also older releases), CLISP and hopefully CMUCL
(which doesn't run on my laptop at the moment so I couldn't test
it). There is also a fairly change that I may have broken something else
when fixing this.
