I think using some kind of canvas widget would give the easiest and most flexible solution (isn't this what the existing clg port of OM is using?), but unfortunately such a widget is not yet included in the Gtk library. Of the may canvas widget that exists for Gtk, I believe goocanvas¹ would be the best candidate as it uses Cairo for rendering. Creating Lisp bindings for it should be quite straight forward.
