Frames as regions embedded within other applications

I have read that frames may also be displayed as regions embedded
within other--CLIM and/or non-Lisp?--applications. I would like to
learn more about this feature, to get the big picture of how it works
and when it can be used. Is there any sample code? If I understand
correctly this feature could be used, say, to edit an embedded image,
possibly in place, in a word processing application.
