I am not a developer of CLISP. You are the one doing it, of course you don't see distinction. Teaching requires to estimate the student's current level so that he may go to next level on the gradient.. I am the student, you are the teacher. The sample shown in that file completion.lisp is too complex for me. I cannot make a step further with that one. What I can do, is to read the description of the function and make application of it. I cannot read the complex function without description and start guessing, I am not yet there.
