I second closing the list to non-members. The signal to noise ratio has been terrible lately, which may be self-perpetuating if reasonable people are unsubscribing from the list due to the spam. For some lists it is indeed useful to allow non-members to post to enable cross-posting. I don't believe that is critical for this list (as far as I can tell, no one has cross-posted on this list for at least a year). If someone wants to post without receiving messages for this list, that person can simply subscribe to the list and turn off delivery.
