we do the described procedure with other third-party projects, even with
those that use CVS.

with clsql my current procedure is to keep a pristine release dir and a
patched dir of the same release. when a new release comes, i make a diff
between these two dirs and try to apply the changes to the new release with
more or less luck. and it only works if i'm the only one locally modifying
clsql...
