dotimes versus dotimes

I'm using CCL 2.5 . Why does DOTIMES 1,000,000,000 take so much longer
to complete than DOTIMES 100,000,000 ? My numbers are below.

(time 
    (dotimes (i 100000000 'DONE)))
    
Total Execution time: 0.605409 seconds
Time spent garbage collecting: 0.0 seconds
DONE

(time 
    (dotimes (i 1000000000 'DONE)))

Total Execution time: 1112.04608 seconds
Time spent garbage collecting: 88.468864 seconds
DONE
