Peculiar error with quote at toplevel

When evaluating something as simple as:
'(1 2)
I get this response in Corman 2.5:
;;; An error occurred in function COMPILE-FORM:
;;; Error: Cannot compile form: (1 2)
;;; Entering Corman Lisp debug loop.
etc...

As it evaluates in LispWorks as expected [(1 2)] what have I done 
incorrectly here? Cheers and thanks in advance.
