The Lisp language has a standard in the form of ANSI, and variations
which include Scheme (also standardized). Corman Lisp refers to one
particular implementation of the language, which is very standards
compliant, or getting there anyway, with a lot of extensions to
actually make it useful for different tasks.

Unlike python, or Perl, which have one standard implementation, so the
language standard and the implementation are almost identical, Commmon
lisp has only been standardized in the last decade and a half, and
before that was more of a family of languages with many
implementations that shared the theoretical underpinnings, but at the
implementation level tended to vary enough to be annoying. If you
would like to play with an example of an older lisp try using emacs
lisp, which is dynamically scoped, single-threaded, and is very
oriented towards text manipulation (makes sense), but is also a very
powerful tool and makes emacs the wonder that it is.

The main implementations of lisp that come to mind:
Corman Lisp -- open-source for the command-line part.
Franz -- heavy duty, and extremely expensive
Harlequin -- nice middle line between Corman and Harlequin
Clisp -- this one is gnu (no multi-threading)

I don't know if this has made things any clearer, but I hope so.

newsnet: comp.lang.lisp (and sub groups)

CAVEAT: This is a group full of very helpful people, and if you have
genuine technical requests I have found those that hang out there very
helpful, however, there are certain prickly characters who for various
murky reasons will take offence to certain posts and flame you at
length. My only advice is to read some of the posts and responses to
get an idea of what you are dealing with, and if you are asking for
help, be specific about what you are looking for, and post the work
you have already done. Hopefully this will save you some nasty
shocks.;)
