Looking at the docs for SDL_AddTimer it states:

"The timer callback function may run in a different thread than your main
program, and so shouldn't call any functions from within itself. You may
always call SDL_PushEvent, however."

Perhaps calling into 'format' is causing the crash. What happens if you
remove the 'format' call and instead just return the next interval. Does
it still crash? What about calling SDL_PushEvent?
