Ah!  Got it.  (Actually, even with public domain code one should still
credit the original authors - in academia that's plagiarism whether or
not the original source is public domain.  The open source community
generally reacts exactly the same way - anyone claiming someone else's
code as their own will not be well regarded, whatever the license
terms.)

If I might make a suggestion, the Modified BSD license might be a good
fit for the manual: http://www.opensource.org/licenses/bsd-license.php

It's liberal enough to permit a wide variety of uses but unlike public
domain insists on maintaining the copyright notice.  So basically any
work based off of the manual would continue to acknowledge CMU's
original copyright.

Thanks! :-).  If the BSD license doesn't look like a good fit I'll draw
up a note saying that for further uses and distributions of the manual
CMU via yourself should be contacted.
