Not sure to what software you're referring, whether it's GCL, GMP,
Maxima, or whatever. In any event, when I work on macOS, I have often
used Homebrew, and .dmg installers, and also compiled packages myself.
I've used macports a few times.

On Windows, I typically rely on pre-packaged installers. Windows
doesn't have Homebrew or anything like that to the best of my
knowledge. My experience has been that trying to set up a development
environment is phenomenally painful, so compiling stuff is a method of
last resort for me.
