We are glad to announce version 1.0.1 of the Shepherd, the first bug-fix
release in the 1.0.x series.

  The Shepherd is a service manager written in Guile that looks after
  the herd of daemons running on the system.  It can be used as an
  =E2=80=9Cinit=E2=80=9D system (PID 1) and also by unprivileged users to m=
anage
  per-user daemons=E2=80=94e.g., gpg-agent, tor, privoxy.  It supports seve=
ral
  daemon startup mechanisms, including inetd, systemd-style socket
  activation, and timers.  The Shepherd is configured in Guile Scheme
  and can be extended in the same language.  It builds on a simple
  memory-safe and callback-free programming model.

  The Shepherd is developed jointly with the GNU Guix project; it is
  used as the init system of Guix System and service manager of
  Guix Home.

=E2=80=A2 Changes since version 1.0.0

  ** =E2=80=98reboot --kexec=E2=80=99 aborts early on if no kexec image was=
 loaded

  Previously, =E2=80=98reboot --kexec=E2=80=99 would proceed to reboot and =
just hang after
  stopping all the services if no kernel image had been loaded (with =E2=80=
=98kexec -l=E2=80=99
  or similar) or if kexec is unsupported (in particular on kernels other th=
an
  Linux).  It now checks for system support and for a pre-loaded kernel ima=
ge
  and does nothing if these two conditions are not meant.

  ** =E2=80=98log-rotation=E2=80=99 service explicitly skips non-regular fi=
les

  Previously, the log rotation service would attempt to rotate non-regular =
files
  with a reported size greater than the threshold; in practice that could
  potentially happen when specifying a directory as an external log file, a=
nd
  only if the threshold is set below 4096 bytes.  Non-regular files are now
  explicitly skipped.

  ** =E2=80=98log-rotation=E2=80=99 no longer crashes with timers having a =
#:log-file

  When a timer service is given a specific #:log-file, the log rotation ser=
vice
  could cause that service=E2=80=99s control fiber to crash when asking it =
to rotate its
  log file.  This is now fixed.

  ** =E2=80=98log-rotation=E2=80=99 removes uncompressed file when using zs=
td

  Previously, when setting #:compression 'zstd, the log rotation service wo=
uld
  leave uncompressed log files, in addition to the .zstd files.  This is now
  fixed, using the =E2=80=98--rm=E2=80=99 flag of the =E2=80=98zstd=E2=80=
=99 command.
