. . . In case it isn't yet obvious, I'm in the midst of a quest to
make M-. more robust and featureful. . . In another few weeks, I
expect the code should be well enough along to publish as a patch,
though not yet ready for incorporating into ilisp directly. (It will
be big, and not fully backward compatible, so a "public comment"
period would be appropriate in any case.)

This patch is available, albeit later (and bigger) than anticipated.
See http://rgrjr.dyndns.org/emacs/ilisp/ for links to the tar file and
the available documentation (which is also included in the tarball).

The code includes a number of improvements over the existing ILISP
M-. implementation; these described at the start of the documentation
page. However, it's still very much a work in progress, so there are
some drawbacks to using it, many of which are documented, and there are
undoubtedly some undocumented drawbacks as well. Fortunately, the patch
is trivial to uninstall if you don't like it, or find that you can't use
it for some reason.

Please address all comments and report any problems you may find to
me at <[email protected]>. If you have something to say
(about a problem or otherwise) that affects whether or not you want to
see this patch re-incorporated into ILISP eventually, then you should
consider including a CC to this list; otherwise, it's probably better
not to flood the list.

   Happy code surfing,
