I'm sorry, I'm not sure what I can suggest, aside from the previous suggestion about using the uncompiled version of ild.el Before I was kicking myself for building my own copy of xemacs, but now I feel better about it. I built xemacs from the source, using the stable version. Here's an alternative, that might make me unpopular. It sounds like you're interested in experimenting with Common Lisp programming. How about going to www.franz.com and downloading the personal edition of Allegro Common Lisp? It's a stellar commercial common lisp and comes with its own emacs lisp mode, which I used happily for years and years, and which seems absolutely bulletproof.
