Yes, I can see it now.  (Not with my customizations, though.  It
seems that my use of lazy-lock and some other stuff hides the
problem.)

Also, even that example of yours gets fontified correctly when the
file is read.  Only changing it, even if you change it immediately
back as you suggest here,...

...seems to upset the fontification.

I suggest that you make a bugreport.

No need to guess, I stated my Emacs version.  I may also be
clueless in many things but I do disable my customizations if I am
trying to reproduce a problem like this.
