You are right (only the interaction was not strange but painfully simple).
The key C-c H was simply bound to hyperlatex-format-buffer.  The problem
vanished when I redefined it as:

    (defkey-ilisp "\C-cH" 'common-lisp-hyperspec)

I had thought that this was automatically done by Debian's ilisp/Hperspec
setup which indeed worked on another machine of mine.  Maybe older
initialization files were doing some setup there.
