Thanks for responding and here are some details.

My .emacs has:

 (load-library "hyperspec")
 (setq common-lisp-hyperspec-root
       "file:/usr/doc/HyperSpec/")
 (setq common-lisp-hyperspec-symbol-table "/usr/doc/HyperSpec/Data/Map_Sym.txt")
 (setq browse-url-netscape-program "/opt/gnome/bin/mozilla")

For:

  M-x hyperspec-lookup RET defun RET

Mozilla doesn't give an error message, it just goes to:

 file:/usr/doc/HyperSpec/Body/mac_defun.html

which is blank.

Netscape returns an error dialog box:

Netscape is unable to locate the file or directory
  /usr/doc/HyperSpec/Body/mac_defun.html

The *Messages* buffer shows:

 Loading inf-lisp...done
 Loading cl-extra...done
 Starting Netscape...
 Mark saved where search started
 Mark set

Chris
