Difference between ASSERT and ASSERT-INSTANCE

What is the difference, if any, between ASSERT with a CLOS instance as
an argument, and ASSERT-INSTANCE?  In other words, I wonder about the
difference between:

  (assert ((make-instance 'my-class ... )))

and:

  (assert-instance (make-instance 'my-class ... ))
