An exhaustive search (i.e., I asked ChatGPT and Perplexity) concludes that ELIZA was not created as a prank but as a demonstration of the superficiality of human-computer interaction. Weizenbaum was not joking around or trying to fool anyone and was surprised and disturbed by how captivating ELIZA turned out to be.

So I’d venture that ELIZA not only demonstrated the superficiality of human-computer interaction but of much human-human interaction as well.

On the other hand, it also demonstrated the power of simple Rogerian-style listening techniques, such as asking, “Why do you feel/think that?” and “Tell me more."
