Recording both would be an even better idea, in my opinion. The thing is, the issue may be more frequent, and if it, for example, is random and only affects just a single sample at a time, it may fall on any of the decimated samples and you would detect it at 1/6 probability after decimation. Comparing both signals would give us more confidence that we are seeing all that there is to the signal before/after.
