There's a variable, version-control, which tells it what to do.  t means always, nil means only if they already exist and never means, well.

I suspect that all this gets fucked with by things like being in a git repo, when it can turn off backups or do some fanciness.  I don't know how that works.

Sawing your own leg off is better than asking Claude, and 'AI' bullshit has poisoned search to the point that it's effectively useless.  Soon, mailing lists and a revived usenet will be the only way of finding things out.  Not so sure about usenet, actually: that was kind of a mistake.  Half serious about this.
