Interesting subject. I also kind of having the same problem with LW to a point that I wanted to implement something for that.
The good example of this done "right" is Local History in Jetbrains IDE:

I would definitely love to have that and not being forced to git client for any simple change I do while experimenting with the code, switching contexts is always disturbing.

Please someone submit a feature request so Martin & Co could make it happen ;)
