Specifically, Xutf8DrawText, Xutf8DrawString, Xutf8LookupString, and so forth. Another relevant file to include from X is Xft.h, it is in /usr/X11R6/include/X11/Xft on my system. This might be included already, not sure. It has all the defines and prototypes needed for using freetype (and fontconfig for finding/configuring fonts for applications) and functions for handling Unicode/ UTF-8 strings.
