A few considerations might be:

For strings, m17n (http://www.m17n.org/m17n-lib/m17n-docs/index.html). This works
with the cairo graphics library if desired (rendering to an X drawable).

For regex, PCRE (http://www.pcre.org/). Current support for regular expressions in 
Lush does not have some features or handle certain expressions as might be expected 
(of course, regex are implementation dependent in most cases).
