Hmm. That is weird.  I've never had that problem.  I don't think 
changing the config.guess will help, I think all it does is figure out 
that you are running OS X, then it doesn't do much else.

What error does it give out of curiosity?  Does it g77 work if you 
compile something by hand?

I put my matlisp.mk file up on my website.  Maybe you could download it 
and see how it differs from yours?
