I have uploaded a revision of my fred-package-indicator contrib to  
the mcl repository:

The fred-package-indicator makes fred display package names in a  
placard instead of in the minibuffer. Load into MCL to get a handy  
menu for changing the current package. Works also with previous  
versions of MCL.
