You're dying in code that's run when a thread is first created and some lisp data structures are initialized from lower-level data structures. In particular, we're trying to find out how much of each of a thread's stacks is "usable" (the "unusable" parts are physically there, but we've overflowed if the stack pointer is past some logical limit.) It looks like the data structure that describes at least one stack "area" is a null pointer, and CCL::%STACK-AREA-USABLE-SIZE is trying to indirect TARGET::AREA.HIGH (= 12 = #xc = 0xc) bytes past that null pointer. To make a long story short, about the only way that that stack "area" pointer could be NULL is if allocate_lisp_stack_area() (defined in "ccl:lisp-kernel;pmcl-kernel.c") returned a null pointer, and that can happen if allocate_lisp_stack() fails, which can happen if allocate_stack() fails. Failure of allocate_stack() probably means that you can't map any more memory, or at least can't map any largish contiguous chunks of it. This is happening in the calling thread (in response to MAKE-PROCESS), and it should certainly signal an error if it sees that the newly-created thread has one or more null stack areas (rather than indirecting through a null pointer and segfaulting.) That's relatively easy; the hard part may be trying to figure out why you're running out of stack memory and what can be done to avoid doing so. (When a thread dies, its stacks will eventually get unmapped. Some parts of a thread's death may not happen until after the next time that the GC runs. From your comments, it sounds like you've created a lot of threads at the point where the error occurs; if they're all active, then an eventual failure is unavoidable, and the issue becomes one of how to fail gracefully - "(error - can't allocate stack(s) for new process)" rather than segfaulting. If most/some of the threads that you've created are dead and are just waiting to have their stacks cleaned up by the GC, then this is a more transient condition that we can probably treat that way.)
