Fantastic!  I've applied this change.

Times are now:

Mzscheme:  26.48 seconds (down from 54.53 seconds)
Native Compiled MzScheme (MzC):  9.30 seconds (down from 41.28 seconds).

Quite a big improvement.  I also surmise that Neil has beefier hardware
than I do :-)
