Nothing and your "arms race" comparison is correct. Unfortunately, some defence is needed if the webmaster doesn't want to be tidying up after each intruder. If someone comes along with a bigger attack, then it's back to the old ways, but will many bother? To be honest, I find if you repel them a couple of times, they go away for a while.
