The problem was that scsh doesn't delete but (I believe) produces
garbage characters, while tcsh behaves as expected.

Does scsh try to determine the expected action from the terminfo
entry of its current terminal?  My speed-skimming the sources doesn't
indicate so.  I guess scsh starts one step down the fallback chain
recommended by the Linux_Backspace/Delete_mini-HOWTO
