The latter goes without saying. Absolutely there will be a migration period -- once there is a general agreement that the migration is worthwhile, that is. Potentially, it might be: the new format seems to offer a degree a conceptual unification and might make SXPath simpler. I can only say at this point that the proposal doesn't seem to irreparably break anything.
