If you use the variant of pre-post-order introduced in
cvs: SSAX/examples/sxml-to-sxml.scm
http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/ssax/SSAX/examples/sxml-to-sxml.scm
you will get
("J" "ohn Smith")
Perhaps you will find it more appropriate and easier to process
further.
