that exhibits the problem -- complete enough that I could run it, see
the problem and make sure the problem is fixed.

I'd like to make a wild guess though. You do not report which Scheme
system you are using. Could it be that your Scheme runs in
case-insensitive mode? Kirill maintains an extensive page that
describes how to switch on case sensitivity on many Scheme systems:

Near the end of the page Kirill describes how to get any
R5RS-compliant Scheme system to work reliably with case-_sensitive_
names of (S)XPath.
