Hi there,

over the past few weeks, Oleg and I have been working together to make
SSAX/SXML easier to use on several Scheme implementations, and make
the results of that effort available in the SF CVS repository. My own
motivation is mainly with ports to Scheme 48 and PLT Scheme.

As the initial part of this, I have removed all non-R5RS-isms from the
source code and most of the examples, wrote auxiliary code for the
non-R5RS functionality and packaged it all up as a set of Scheme 48
interface and structure definitions. (PLT support will follow within
a few days, I hope.) This has all been checked into the SF CVS
repository.

This means that the code as-is works great on Scheme 48, and future
ports should be much simplified because the Scheme 48 package
declarations document precisely the imports and exports of each file.

However, we haven't made the necessary adjustments yet to make it work
as smoothly on other Scheme implementations for which SSAX/SXML used
to work. This is no big deal, but Oleg and I would like to avoid
excessive system-specific hackery which might lead to maintenance
nightmares

Oleg and I will work on having some kind of module-like file describe
the dependencies between the files in the SSAX distribution (or
possibly use the Scheme 48 package declarations for that), and
generate the necessary scaffolding to make things work with the other
Scheme implementations. Because of the wide diversity in this area,
this might take a while. However, we expect much-improved portability
and maintainability as a result

(Again, many thanks to Oleg for creating this crucial bit of
software!)
