There are two such modules, RPy and RSPython.  

I would agree, Python is an excellent language; my favorite, by far,
after Lisp and R.  Platform independence and "plays well with other
langauges" are quite robust.  HOWEVER, I'm getting less and less
convinced that the OOP aspects that Python excels at are suitable for
interactive data analysis (maybe for scripted analysis, but not for a
line-at-a-time approach, which R can encourage).
