After much runaround, I gave up and set the keyboard as Australian in System Preferences. Which gives shift-3 as the hash character (or octothorpe as some refer to it). Very early days for me with SBCL, so pretty hopelessly at sea. I'm completely confused as to whether I should be thinking I'd dealing with Emacs, Slime, Swank or SBCL. Almost all the functions and variables that I have seen referred to, seem not bound in lisp. And hunting through unfamiliar packages hasn't helped. define-key key-translation-map kbd ns-right-alternate-modifier global-set-key ... To follow Marco's lead I couldn't find a list of character names as appropriate for input. Clearly a lot more familiarising and muscle-memory (from Zmacs & Hemlock) forgetting/re-training is required. I get the impression that a quicklisp for Hemlock hasn't come to fruition. Thanks for the help.
