Thanks, Marco.  That info simplifies the search for a "foolproof" script,
but there are still some gaps to fill in.  I'll have to go play with melpa
now and remind myself how it works.

Obviously, the ease of setting up an Emacs/slime/SBCL environment on Mac
and Windows machines will have a pretty large effect on the future
popularity of the language.  Lisp-in-Emacs is one of those things that most
people have to try in order to appreciate its value.
