Thanks for this and pardon my ignorance. I don't know how to make sure 
*that* particular command has been executed.

 From the fact that M-x slime leaves me in sbcl-2.5.10, I assumed that 
the sbcl bit was executed.
 From the fact that (dynamic-space-size) returns 1024^3 rather than 3 
times that, I assumed that the option
was not executed. Perhaps the entire command was not executed and then I 
don't know why I wound up in
sbcl, but that's my problem.
