yeeeees, but the database would not reduce much in size merely by
compacting, as compaction only removes deleted articles and restores
database integrity as a byproduct.  So purging is complementary to
compacting, otherwise you'd need to manually delete articles.  

Mind you I have long since forgotton what the default purging options
are... I set mine to never purge as soon as I installed Dialog, as I wanted
control over what was deleted, and when.

Anyway, half of Wild Card's question was on how to purge, and is what I
added.  so ner <pokes tongue out>  ;-)
