To add one: what should be returned? A list of messages only, the
matching lines or even some kind of surrounding environment?

The default for search strings should be a simple wildcard mechanism,
for power users it should be switchable to regular expressions.

What about combination of criteria? What may be useful is a
combination of time period (upper/lower limit), Author (From:) and
search text.
I didn't read the spec yet, but remember that folders are included. So
also a search through one folder / all folders may be good criteria.
