Ben,
I think the answer you are looking for is stunnel. I use it with blat without a problem.
Take a look at http://www.blat.net/examples/stunnelConfig.html for a sample configuration file.

Subject: [blat] Sending emails over TLS to SMTPS port? Plan for implementation?
As I read (in some comments in the past) blat cannot send emails over TLS ports 465 (or 587).
Is this still the case or is TLS functionality meanwhile implemented?
Are there any plans to implement them in the near future?
Since more and more email providers offer TLS as their primary connection type or even deny
other types of email connections blat becomes more and more useless.
This is pity. I would like to use blat in the future as well.
