awk is an alternative provided by more than one package:

% ls -l =awk
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 21 14. Dez 2003  /usr/bin/awk -> /etc/alternatives/awk

% grep-dctrl -FProvides awk -sPackage /var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.de.debian.org_debian_dists_unstable_main_binary-powerpc_Packages
Package: gawk
Package: mawk
Package: original-awk
