Both.  There are probably hundreds of pine users on campus working on a
variety of platforms.  If pine is deprecated (and it is, pretty
seriously, at the institutional level because of security holes and
because of its odd license) then they'll all need something to move to.
Some of them will doubtless go to mutt, elm, balsa, thunderbird,
enlightenment, but all of them are flawed in my opinion, most of them
more so than cone.

Cone is flawed but not too seriously; it seems to be within SPITTING
DISTANCE of being a damn good mail client.  It sounds like you pretty
much agree (point by point with the flaws:-).  If we can get the
developers to agree, and to make the suggested (mostly fairly minor)
changes, then I'll feel pretty good recommending that all Duke users of
pine consider cone if they want to stay with a console-level tool.
