Cannot compose new message

I am running cone 0.66 and I cannot compose a new message. If I select Write from the main menu (either pressing W or selecting with arrow keys + Enter) the status bar changes to "OK" and nothing happens. I can access all other parts of the program. Does cone call an external program to compose the mail? If so how can I test if this is what is failing? Can anyone offer any other suggestions on what might cause this problem?
