Cone's configure script relies on the compiler's default search path to find include files, and stuff. It doesn't lug around its own list of default directories to poke. You should be able to use CPPFLAGS and LDFLAGS. Cone's spec file for Fedora Core 1 explicitly sets CPPFLAGS and LDFLAGS, prior to running configure, and points them to where the wide curses lives on FC1. Works fine.
