If, for example, you typed "pop3.gmail.com" for the POP3 server's name, specify the POP3 server's name as "pop3.gmail.com/novalidate-cert", instead. You'll probably need to do the same for the SMTP server's name as well. It's also a good idea to report this problem to the Ubuntu maintainer for this package, because /novalidate-cert is just a workaround for some bug in that Ubuntu package. I don't use Ubuntu, so I'm not familiar with their bug reporting procedures. Generally, if you install a pre-built package and have an issue, it's always better to contact whoever you got the package from, rather than the package's original source.
