Cone, on Linux and other platforms with the Gamin and FAM library will use  
them to display changes to contents of maildirs in realtime. Also, if an  
IMAP server implements the IDLE extension, it also gets used to reflect  
changes to the contents of the currently open IMAP folders, in real time.

In all other configurations, Cone checks for changes to the currently opened  
folder's contents every couple of minutes.
