SA-Exim adds that fake line at the top to make the message look like an mbox message in addition to being in a maildir folder. If you read the maildir folder as maildir, that From line should not be used, but I can see that some tool would be upset by that. Ultimately, this line is fake and it's added by SA-Exim only so that you can do cat new/* > mbox; mutt -f mbox The date should have a correct format though.
