I hadn't but now that I have there were indeed a few rather old unfinished PHP processes. Although these were not really in any way related to this "emailing" job in question. So I'm not sure if they could have caused this stuck pipe problem or not.

I also wonder how one would go about debugging this "stuck pipe" state...
